DYC Training Opportunities

Once you leave any creek or inlet in Virginia and enter the Potomac River you are entering Maryland and have to follow Maryland Laws. PWC use age is different in Maryland and Virginia so make sure you are legal.

Boater education certification has become a requirement:

• In Maryland everyone born after 1972.
• In Virginia everyone using PWC or motorboat with 10hp or greater engine. Code of Virginia 29.1-700 states: '"Motorboat" means any vessel propelled by machinery whether or not the machinery is the principal source of propulsion.' which includes Sailboats with outboards or inboards.

Safety Boat Use

DYC has a boat for use during hurricanes to ferry members to/from the hurricane anchorage and to function as a safety boat / race committee boat for sailboat races. Members needing to operate the boat for these activities are required to receive training before operating the boat and need to appear on the Approved Boat Operators list.
