Dahlgren Yacht Club Information
Location
The Dahlgren Yacht Club located at Naval Support Facility (NSF) in Dahlgren, VA, is a Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR), Non-Appropriated Fund Instrumentality (NAFI) organization. DYC membership dues, slip rentals and membership labor are the only source for maintenance and expansion of DYC facilities.
Physical Access
To utilize DYC, a potential member must be able to access the base, which requires possession of a military ID, or civilian government CAC card. The DYC membership card does not provide base access.
Operation
The facility is operated by an uncompensated elected board of governors (BOG) who perform BOG tasking in their spare time. As such, it can take a couple of weeks to process an application. Membership details can be found in the DYC Constitution approved by Base Command. It is necessary to join the club to use the facility. Military personnel temporarily stationed at Dahlgren for school will be accommodated as space allows.
Fees
For a nominal membership fee, the club provides recreational opportunities to members. It does NOT provide storage for boats, but does provide a facility for members to use their boats. For additional fees a limited number of lockers, wet slips and dry slips are available for boats in regular use. Dues and fees are yearly, starting 1 April. The facility consists of a dockhouse (with heads, showers, ice machine and meeting room), a boat ramp, a dock with about 60 slips, about 15 dry slips, about 10 parking spaces for cars, and a small area along the road for parking of trailers and towing vehicles (while a boat is in use).
Activities
DYC holds scheduled sailboat races twice a week, in season, for daysailers and sloops. There are various social activities throughout the year some at the DYC facility and some at other locations.
Storm conditions
It is important to note that in the event of an evacuation order by Base Command, generally for extreme weather events (hurricane), members who are assigned slips must be available to evacuate the facility with only a few hours notice. Small boats will need to be removed from the facility. Larger boats will need to be moved to the hurricane hole anchorage up Machodoc creek. This must be before NSF Dahlgren closes to access for the approaching storm. DYC members will run a shuttle service to assist members with transportation to/from the anchored boats during anchoring and retrieval activities.
Facility Maintenance
DYC is responsible for maintenance of the buildings, grounds, launching ramp, docks and pier. Most facility maintenance is done by members, keeping costs low. There are no employees, nor any onsite dockmaster.
